Attendance

Smythe Academy of Arts & Sciences
Attendance and Academic Achievement
Smythe Academy and CA Education Code have the shared goal of ensuring students attend school each day and arrive on time because attendance is a significant part of students’ school experience.  The first 15 minutes of class is a crucial part of the school day.  When students are absent, late, or leave early from school, academic achievement suffers and students miss the opportunity to develop positive classroom relationships and participate in school activities.

Attendance:
  • If a student is absent for any reason you must do one of the following:Notify the office at
916-566-2740, select Option 2, stop by the office, or use our Smythe App.   You have 5 school days to report an absence before it becomes an automatic unexcused absence.
  • According to California School Law, the only legal reasons for children to be absent from school are the following:(These are considered excused absences.)
    • Illness, dentist or doctor appointment
    • Bereavement/Attending a funeral service of an immediate family member
    • Participation in religious instruction in accordance with district policy
  • If your child is tardy (30+ minutes late to school) due to a Doctor/Dental appointment, it is considered “excused” which falls under the “excused absence” category.
  • Upon accumulating 10 “excused absences” in a school year, any further absences will require verification by a medical practitioner and a School Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting will be scheduled at the school to discuss interventions to correct the attendance concerns.
  • Students will be classified as truant if absent from school without a valid excuse and/or tardy
(30+ minutes late for school) 6 times for reasons other than a Doctor/Dental Appointment.  These are considered unexcused absences/tardies.  , a School Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting will be scheduled at the school to discuss interventions to correct the attendance concerns.
  • SART Contract:If, after a SART contract is written, the pattern of tardiness and/or absences continue, the attendance case may be referred to a SARB (School Attendance Review Board) meeting.A SARB establishes an intervention agreement through a panel which may include law enforcement, school nurse, and community agency personnel.
  • Lates/TardiesA student is late when he/she arrives to their classroom after the bell rings at 8:10am.  If your student is late or tardy for school, they must check in at the office to get a late slip.
Early DismissalsTry to schedule doctor and dental appointments before or after school hours.  Please No Early Dismissals after 2:20pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday and after 12:20pm on Wednesdays.  If the appointment is during school hours, we encourage your child to be in class before the appointment and return back to class after the appointment, if time allows.
Perfect AttendancePerfect Attendance is defined as no absences, no lates (29 minutes and under), no tardies (30+ minutes), no suspensions, and no early dismissals.
